Mike Atkinson

Project Worker (Volunteering Scheme)

I started working at Bramley Elderly Action in May 2018. My role is to help recruit, train and support BEA volunteers.

Previously I have worked for a Volunteer Run Library, managed a Volunteer Centre andMike Atkinson social car scheme, supported and advised charities and social enterprises to start-up and deliver local services and advised credit unions. I’ve worked for small charities, a worker cooperative and a rural local authority (Somerset County Council). Whilst at SCC I advised charities and social enterprises for 10 years following which I was transferred for 2 years to work on Rural Broadband rollout across Devon and Somerset and supporting the building of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station! Not the most logical fit for my skills but very interesting work!

I have volunteered on young people’s projects, been a credit union volunteer and director, acted as a business mentor to small charities and helped set up a Men’s Shed.

I was born in Thetford, Norfolk, went to Manchester to study, moved to Leeds for work and to get married before leaving for the Southwest for 15 years. We then spent three years in Cambridgeshire and returned to West Yorkshire in 2015.

I’ve got qualifications in Voluntary Sector Management, Credit Union management and Business Planning.

My wife and I have 1 child, 1 cat, 2 rabbits and at least one mouse (who shares the rabbit hutch seemingly happily). When not at work I enjoy music, concerts, walking, watching films and the occasional bike ride.
